About us

R Lazy S has been family owned and operated for over 75 years. Since 1948 the ranch has been a gathering place for families and friends seeking. The R Lazy S is one of the longest running, still operating, historic dude ranches in Jackson Hole.

Life at the R Lazy S goes back to simpler times when we were close to the land and knew how to enjoy it. The R Lazy S invites visitors from around the world each summer to ride horses, experience the cowboy lifestyle and connect with nature. The ranch consists of 14 historic log cabins, a 100-year old dining lodge, and our Barn which provides a home to our herd of nearly 80 horses, and a pair of donkeys.

Whether it’s your first visit or your fortieth, a week on the ranch will feel like home.

Location

The R Lazy S is situated in an oasis of lush aspen groves, cottonwood stands, and sagebrush flats bordered by the Snake River, Teton Range and Grand Teton National Park. While the ranch itself feels like a wilderness escape, we are conveniently located 1 mile from Teton Village Mountain Resort, and a short to the town of Jackson, the Jackson Hole Airport, and Grand Teton Visitor Center.

The R Lazy S is a wildlife wonderland. Our 360 acre ranch property is protected by conservation easement through the Jackson Hole Land Trust. From herds of elk, moose, bears, and the occasional pack of wolves, wildlife encounters are a highlight of many guests’ stay.

All that separates the R Lazy S from Grand Teton National Park is our buckrail fence, it doesn’t get any more ‘prime location’ than that!

Main Lodge

The ranch’s century-old lodge is the true heart of the R Lazy S. Our dining room, Kid’s Dining Room, and Living room are located inside the lodge. The back porch, with sweeping view of the Tetons and horse pastures is the perfect place to enjoy outside meals, have a drink or watch the sunset.

During colder weather no cozier place can be found on the ranch than in snuggled up on the couch next to our roaring fireplace. Borrow books from our ‘lending library’ or grab a board game to play with friends. Cookies, fruit, tea and lemonade are always available 24/7.

Cabins

Accommodations at the ranch consist of 14 historic guest cabins, several of which are over 100 years old. Each has its own charm, features, and views. Enjoy the magnificent scenery from the porch of your log cabin, relax by the fire after a day in the saddle, or gather with friends and family. Various floor plans and sizes can accommodate both large and small families as well as solo travelers. All cabins have private bathrooms and electric heat and wifi. Most have a sitting room with a stone fireplace or wood burning stove. Each provides maximum comfort and classic ranch atmosphere.

Our Legacy

The Stirn family have owned and operated the R Lazy S for three generations. The land has been in our family for four.  Our legacy features a long and unique history based on friendships, partnerships, and a dedication to preserving Jackson Hole’s Wild West character. We are proud to say that the R Lazy S Ranch is one of the longest running + still operating dude ranches in Jackson Hole. We are just as proud of our designation as the very first private Conservation Easement in the Jackson Hole Land Trust.

While we take pride in upholding the dude ranching tradition, preserving historic cabins, and conserving wild lands, what truly makes the ranch special are our guests. It is an honor to watch families grow as many return year after year, generation after generation. In recognition of our returning guests, we offer belt buckles for significant return-iversaries. 10 years at the R Lazy S is rewarded with a Bronze belt buckle, and 20 with Silver. We are proud to have offered several hundred bronze and silver belt buckles since we began this tradition.
